1938–39 Romanian Hockey League season

The 1938-39 Romanian Hockey League season was intended to be the 14th season of the Romanian Championship. The competition was divided into three regional groups, with the top teams from each group qualifying for the final round.[1]

HC Iasi gained a spot in the Liga-Klasse, while CFR Cernauti had to play in the 2. Klasse.

By defeating Muncitorul, CFR Cernauti qualified for the Liga-Klasse.

The championship was interrupted due to thaw. The games between Iasi and Dragos Voda and Jahn could not be played on their scheduled dates and were intended to be contested on February 11 and 12. The Liga-Klasse schedule could not be completed due to warm temperatures melting the ice, and the season’s format, with the 2. Klasse competition taking place ahead of time with the winner advancing to play in Liga-Klasse, was regarded as a failure. Dragos Voda and Jahn Cernauti were set to advance to the national championship.

SS Mureşul Târgu Mureş was set to advance to the national championship.

Cluj finished first, and it was decided, after the Class II teams expressed annoyance, that they should play the second place finisher of Class I (Miercurea Ciuc) in a two-game series for a spot in the national championship.

Qualifier

Due to thaw, the second match, slated for February 12, could not be played, so the second national championship participant was decided by lots, which were drawn in favor of SP Cluj.

As Telefon Club Bucharest was playing international matches, they were permitted to forgo the first round and played a two-legged series against the winner.

Category II

Astra Romana Bucharest won the championship while going undefeated. The other participants were: CFR, Gloria II, Metropola II, Sportul Studentesc II, and Telefon Club II,

Final round

The final round was scheduled to be played from February 12-16, 1939, in Bucharest, at the Patinoarul Otetelesanu. The owners of the rink closed the facility to protest the increase on electricity taxes.

As the weather warmed up, organizing the championship on natural ice was not possible, and a Romanian champion was not crowned in 1939.
