National Championship

The national championship was staged from January 23-25, 1944, in Bucharest. Dragos Voda Cernauti withdrew from the championship on the grounds that the federation had initially stated the tournament would be played in Cernauti.

The director of the Venus Bucharest hockey club, Andrei Barbulescu, stated that his team should be declared national champions without facing Juventus, whom they had already defeated twice, again. The General Pompeius Demitrescu, president of the Venus sports club, decided the team should play the game against Juventus, for which 2000 spectators were expected.

Venus defeated Juventus for a third time and claimed the national championship after an easy victory over Universitatea Sibiu. Barbulescu was suspended for one year by the federation for "unsportsmanlike conduct".

  • Venus Bucharest 2 - Juventus Bucharest 0 (2:0, 0:0, 0:0) - Barbulescu, Turceanu
  • Juventus Bucharest 9 - Universitatea Sibiu 1 (2:0, 5:1, 2:0)

There was also a “national championship” played in Cernauti - contested by HC Iasi and local teams. It was said that the two Bucharest teams and Universitatea Sibiu had forfeited their participation in the tournament, but in reality they were also playing for the national championship among themselves.

  • 1/22: HC Iasi - Prutul CFR Cernauti 2:0 - semifinal
  • 1/23: Dragos Voda Cernauti - HC Iasi 4:0 - final
  • 1/23: HC Iasi - Munca si Lumina Cernauti (reinforced with Dragos Voda Players) 1:0 - exhibition

A decision was eventually made by the federation, which ruled that no team was declared national champions for 1943-44. Venus Bucharest was declared champions of the Bucharest region, and Dragos Voda Cernatui champions of Moldova and Bukovina.
