The 1940-41 Romanian Hockey League season was the 15th season of the Romanian Championship. Juventus Bucharest won the championship.[1]
Season overview
Following the Ribbentrop-Molotov Pact, the June 1940 Soviet Ultimatum demanded from Romania the northern part of Bukovina, a region bordering Galicia (the latter annexed by the Soviet Union at 1939 Poland's partition in 1939). The Soviet demand for Bukovina surprised Nazi Germany, though it did not formally oppose it. In the first Soviet ultimatum addressed to the Romanian government, the partly Ukrainian populated northern Bukovina was "demanded" as a minor "reparation for the great loss produced to the Soviet Union and Bassarabia's population by twenty-two years of Romanian domination of Bassarabia". On June 28, 1940, the Romanian government evacuated Northern Bukovina, and the Red Army moved in, with the new Soviet-Romanian border being traced less than 20 kilometres (12 miles) north of Putna Monastery.
Hungary also attempted to regain Transylvania, which it had lost in World War I. Germany and Italy pressured both Hungary and Romania to resolve the situation in a bilateral agreement. The two delegation met in Turnu Severin but the negotiations failed due to a demand for a 60,000 square kilometres territory on Hungarian side and only a population exchange on Romanian side. To impede a Hungarian-Romanian war in their "hinterland", the Axis powers pressured both governments to accept their arbitration: the Second Vienna Award, which reassigned the territory of Northern Transylvania from Romania to Hungary.
These developments precluded teams from Cernauti, Miercurea Ciuc, and Targu Mures from participating in the national championship, which was limited solely to Bucharest. Juventus Bucharest, the successor to Rapid Bucharest, won the championship by defeating Venus Bucharest in the final. It was watched by 1500 spectators and was the last game to take place at the Patinoarul Otetelesanu, which was closed by its owners who sold the rink's compressors and refrigeration systems on the second-hand market.
