The New South Wales Championship was first contested in the New South Wales region of Australia in 1922.

The winners were awarded the Hamilton Trophy from 1922-1935, the McGeahran Trophy from 1936-1937, the Buchan Trophy from 1938-1940, and the Chaiwin Trophy from 1954 to 1981.

The competition was then known as the CP Air Cup Superleague from 1982 to 2000. The East Coast Super League was then established as the top league in NSW in 2002.
