The 1949 Goodall Cup was the 28th edition of the inter-state series between Victoria and New South Wales. It was won by Victoria, who claimed the championship for the 6th time in total, and the first since 1947.
The first series was played from July 22-29, 1949. The competition for the Goodall Cup was staged as part of the second series from September 17-24, at the Sydney Glaciarium and the Ice Palais at Moore Park. The strength of the cup was reportedly halved as players from the breakaway Victorian Ice Hockey League (VIHL) were not allowed to participate.
There were three test series played between Victoria and New South Wales from July to November, 1949. There were separate series' involving the VIHL and the VIHA players.
1st series
- 7/22: Victoria - New South Wales
- 7/27: New South Wales - Victoria
- 7/29: New South Wales - Victoria 4:4 - goals: Kennedy (2), Green (2)/Dunn (2), Jones, Kent
2nd series
- Victoria 3 - New South Wales 3
- Victoria 4 - New South Wales 2
- Victoria 7 - New South Wales 3
- Victoria 3 - New South Wales 1
3rd series
The third series was played from October 29 to November 5, 1949. The New South Wales Ice Hockey Association extended an invitation to the Victorian Ice Hockey League to a play a series of matches in Sydney. It was intended to resolve the issues they perceived with the separate Victorian leagues.
The next year NSW informed the VIHL they would only recognize and play against the VIHA.
