1964–65 Serie A (ice hockey) season
The 1964-65 Serie A season was the 31st season of the Serie A, the top level of ice hockey in Italy. Six teams participated in the league, and SG Cortina won the championship.
Season Overview
Some young members of Diavoli Milano who had been called up to the first team requested money to cover expenses, leading to their suspension by the team leaders. Gianfranco Rigamonti, Giorgio Rigamonti, Andrea Lusena, Marco Lusena, Luciano Nucci, Renato Brivio and Luigi Redaelli were suspended until January 2, when they made their debut in a 7-5 loss to Bolzano, by invoking Giancarlo Agazzi and Mario Bedoya.
Cortina initially defeated Alleghe 11-0 on December 20, 1964. However, they used one player (Remigio Moracutti) who was already registered with Amatori Cortina in the Promozione. As this violated regulations, the FISG awarded the match to Alleghe as a 5-0 forfeit.
The Cortina-Bolzano match on December 27 ended when a fight broke out 17 minutes into the game, when Gene Rebellato punched Alberto Da Rin after the former had incurred a misconduct penalty. The referees failed to control the situation and a brawl erupted. Bolzano left the ice and refused to continue the game, so the FISG declared Cortina victorious, 5-0 on forfeit.
At the 7:30 mark of the second period in a game between Alleghe and Cortina on January 17, 1965, the game was stopped as the Alleghe goaltender, Renato De Toni, had his mask smashed by two consecutive hard shots and required 10 stitches. Lacking a backup goaltender, Alleghe was unable to continue the game and were forced to forfeit.
In yet another incident involving a Cortina match, they were ahead 4-3 in the closing seconds at Bolzano, when Alfredo Coletti scored the tying goal for the hosts. However, the German referee, Zeller, disallowed the goal, calling a roughing penalty against Bolzano. Although the other referee, Neumaier, disagreed, the call stood, and the angry home crowd began to throw objects on the ice to voice their displeasure. The FISG barred Bolzano from playing at home for a month, forcing them to play in Genoa during the final round.
