1959–60 Serie A (ice hockey) season
The 1959-60 Serie A season was the 26th season of the Serie A, the top level of ice hockey in Italy. Four teams participated in the league, and HC Diavoli Milano won the championship.
Season Overview
The race for the championship was a three-way affair between Milan, Bolzano, and Cortina, the clubs remaining close in the standings throughout the year. Auronzo provided little competition and finished the season winless.
Two of the matches between Bolzano and Cortina were mired in controversy. Cortina filed a complaint about three issues that arose during the game between the clubs, hosted by Bolzano, on January 9. There was a non-existent validated goal for Bolzano, where the goal judge did not light the lamp to mark the tally. Cortina also protested that the hosts goaltender, Alfredo Coletti, was wearing a metal mask to protect his fractured chin. They claimed the mask violated article 24 of the competition regulations. Their final complaint was over the behavior of some Bolzano fans, who stole sticks from the bench and used them to hit Alberto Da Rin and Giuseppe Zandegiacomo. The FISG rejected all the complaints.
Another game between the clubs was played in Bolzano on January 20. Cortina left the ice with four minutes remaining in the second period, after their captain Carmine Tucci was thrown out of the game for an altercation with Enrico Bacher, feeling the referees were biased against them. The game was subsequently awarded 2-0 on forfeit to Bolzano.
When HC Diavoli Milano lost to Cortina 6-2 with only four games remaining, their prospects in the championship race seemed dim. But they rattled off three straight victories (7-2 against Auronzo, 6-5 versus Bolzano, and 4-3 over Cortina) to re-enter the fray. Going into the final game against Bolzano at home, the Milanese needed a victory to claim the championship. The hosts fell behind 3-1, but stormed back to earn a 7-4 victory and the national title.
