As a precaution, Diavoli decided not to use Ott, although the player was on the bench for the game. The 1951-52 Serie A season was the 19th season of the Serie A, the top level of ice hockey in Italy. Eight teams participated in the league, and HC Milan Inter won the championship.

The first round was divided into two groups of three teams apiece. The teams played twice against one another with the top team in each group advancing to the final. HC Milan Inter and HC Diavoli Rossoneri Milano received byes to the final round.
