Chile is a country in South America. Santiago is the capital and largest city.
History of hockey in Chile
The National Association of Hockey on Ice and Inline is the governing body of ice and inline hockey in Chile. The country joined the IIHF in 2000.[1]
There are rumors that ice hockey was played in the harbor city of Valparaiso as early as the 1970s. These claims have never been substantiated, and it may well have been that the game being played was field hockey.[2]
Recreational ice rinks exist in Santiago, but there is no ice hockey played in the capital.
A 40x15 ice rink opened in the southern Chilean city of Punta Arenas in 2010. Hockey has been played at the rink since 2012. It played host to the Copa Invernada three-on-three ice hockey tournament from 2013-2016.[3] In 2018 and 2019 the Puerto Williams Tournament was played on the Laguna Zanartu. Punta Arenas hosted the Endemic Celebration Cup in 2022 and the Copa Kotaix in 2023.
The Chilean National Team participated in the 2017 Pan American Ice Hockey Tournament, and has competed in the Amerigol Latam Cup since 2019. The national inline hockey team participated in the IIHF InLine Hockey World Championships, their last appearance coming in 2002.
