History of hockey in Singapore

The Singapore Ice Hockey Association is the governing body of ice hockey in the country. Singapore joined the IIHF on May 2, 1996.[1]

Some early efforts to get hockey going in Singapore were made by the Touras and Marine teams after the first rink opened in the 1970s. Students at the University of Singapore tried the sport a few years later. Hockey was given a further boost after the Fuji Ice Palace opened at the former Rex Theatre in McKenzie Road in 1988.

Domestic teams only played exhibition games until the Singapore National Ice Hockey League was first contested in 1994-95. It was played annually until 2009, when the Fuji Ice Palace was shut down. With the opening of the JCube Ice Rink in 2012, the league was re-started for the 2012-13 season.

The national team made its international debut in 1977, facing Malaysia twice. Singapore won one game 5-1 and tied the other 3-3. More than 30 years later, Singapore returned to compete in the 2008 IIHF Challenge Cup of Asia. Their best finish to date in the Challenge Cup was second place in the 2015 Division I tournament.[2]
