History of hockey in Indonesia

The Federasi Hoki Es Indonesia (Indonesia Ice Hockey Association) was founded in 2012. The country joined the IIHF on May 19, 2016.

Indonesia has sent teams to participate in tournaments such as the Malaysia International Ice Hockey Tournament, the Singapore Invitational Ice Hockey Tournament, and the Land of Smiles Ice Hockey Classic in Thailand.

There is an Indonesia Ice Hockey League run by the Federasi Hoki Es Indonesia and based out of the Sky Rink Jakarta.[1][2] Indonesia presently has five senior and three junior clubs in existence.

From November 23-25, 2012, a tournament called the Indonesia National Ice Hockey Tournament was played. It was divided into A and B divisions, with the Jakarta Blues winning the A Division and the Wild Panthers winning the B Division. The tournament has been repeated annually since then. In 2015, there were Adult, U14, and U12 divisions contested.

Ice hockey was first played in Indonesia in 1996 when the country's second indoor rink, the Sky Rink, opened at the Mall Taman Anggrek in Jakarta. Indonesia's first rink, the Senayan-Jakarta, had been built in the 1980s. Two more rinks have recently opened, the Gardenice (800 square metres) in Bandung and the 24-by-55-metre BX Rink at the Bintaro Jaya Xchange Mall in Tangsel.

Back in 1998, two teams known as the Flaming Nitro Jakarta and Barong Jakarta existed. Teams from three nations participated in the Jakarta Cup, staged in October 1997.
