1915–16 American ice hockey season
This was the 1915-16 American ice hockey season:
California
The Techau Tavern Ice Palace opened in San Francisco on May 1, 1916. The San Francisco Hockey Club, which had been founded on April 25, held its first practice on May 10, and played a demonstration game during it, the second team, coached by Pete Muldoon, edging the first team (also called the Regulars) 4-3. Regulars roster: A. Knott (goal), W. Tozer (point), Dr. Skilton (cover point), W.D. Dunning (right wing), A.T. Peters (center), W.D. Clark (rover), Harold Mack (left wing). Muldoons roster: T. McClaughry (goal), Ray Bowers (point), C. Moody (cover point), Ben Johnston (right wing), F. Sylvestor (center), W. Blackhall (rover), F. Burns (left wing).
An ice hockey game was played in San Diego on May 13, on the ice rink at the Panama-California International Exposition (in the former Alhambra Cafeteria building). The San Diegos faced the Canadians in it. San Diegos roster: Lieut, Royce, Lieutenant Harmon, Dr. Reams, Andrews, Arthur Donaldson. Canadians: N.S. Boucher, J.W. Walters, Adams, C.S. Peary, Harry Wilcox. After their June 16 game, the Canadians were renamed the Exposition team. Other teams that played included the Barker-Gilmores, Lions, and the Oregon Cavalry Troop A.
The first official game in San Francisco took place on May 26, with the Polo Club edging out the Hockey Club 10-9. On June 3, there were two women's games played between the Minerva Hockey Club of Oakland and San Francisco. The Canadian and Olympic clubs lined up for a game on June 13.
The Bay Counties Amateur Hockey Association was formed at the Techau Tavern on July 10. The following officers were elected: Honorary Presidents - William Greer Harrison (Olympic Club), and Edward H. Sinclair (Canadian Club), President - Dr. Arthur Beardslee (Olympic Club), 1st Vice President - James A. McDonald (Caledonian Club), 2nd Vice President - Corbett Moody (Polo Hockey Club), 3rd Vice President - J. H. O'Keefe (Canadian Club), Secretary Treasurer - A. C. Morrison (Polo Hockey Club), Executive Committee - John H. Thomlinson (Caledonian Club), Harold Hoeber (Indoor Yacht Club), C. H. Minto (Canadian Club), J. S. A. Macdonald (San Francisco Hockey Club), Sven Philip (Olympic Club), A. C. Morrison (Polo Hockey Club). A six team league was set up, consisting of the Canadian Club, Polo, Hockey and Skating Club (also called simply the Polo Club), Olympic Club, Indoor Yacht Club, Caledonian Club, and the San Francisco Hockey Club. The Canadian Club won the championship, going undefeated on the season, which ran from July 18 to October 24, 1916.
There were talks of San Francisco joining the Pacific Coast Hockey Association, if it was found feasible for the other teams to make the long journey to California. It was deemed not to be, as no team from the city was admitted.

The Detroit Hockey Club completed another successful season as an independent club, predominantly facing Canadian teams. Portage Lakes, Calumet, and the Michigan Soo again competed in the American Amateur Hockey Association. The Soo lost the MacNaughton Cup to the St. Paul Athletic Club, falling to them 3 games to 1 in the final series.
There were talks of forming a four-division American National Hockey Association for the 1916-17 season. Nothing came of it, but the proposed divisions were as follows: East: New York, Boston, Syracuse, Philadelphia or Brooklyn; Middle West: Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, and Chicago; Northwest: St. Paul, Calumet, Portage Lakes, and Michigan Soo; West: Duluth, Portland, Seattle, and another team.

The St. Paul Athletic Club joined the American Amateur Hockey Association for the 1915-16 season. They won the MacNaughton Cup after defeating the Michigan Soo in a four-game, tiebreaker series. In March, St. Paul AC defeated Lachine in Montreal for the Art Ross Cup. Their win was voided, however, as the trustees deemed Bert Mohan a professional. The Minneapolis Athletic Club (at first the Minneapolis Victorias) played an independent schedule for the season.
The Minneapolis Park Hockey League consisted of 11 teams. The Camdens won the American Division, while the Lake Harriet Hockey Club took the National Division. The Harriet team won the championship game. Teams: National Division - Vertex, Bryants, Lake Harriet, North Commons, Van Cleves, American Division: Maple Hills, Camdens, Minnetonka, Minneapolis Tennis Club, Vermo AC, Deephaven.
The Duluth Amateur Hockey League was again contested, and was won by the Universals. There was a hockey tournament played in conjunction with the St. Paul Winter Carnival. More than 20 teams competed, and Thief River Falls won the championship.

Pennsylvania
Hockey was played on a significant level in Pittsburgh for the first time since the 1909-10 season in 1915-16, with the opening of the Winter Garden at Exposition Hall rink, and the re-opening of the Duquesne Gardens.
The Duquesne Garden Club had a very successful season playing an independent schedule. They played and defeated many strong Canadian teams, and also swept the St. Paul Athletic Club, holders of the MacNaughton Cup, in a three-game series. The Winter Garden team also operated as an independent, but played in only four games.
