This was the 1899-1900 American ice hockey season:

Chicago, Illinois

A meeting featuring the hockey players of the Wanderers' Cricket Club was held on January 10, 1900, for the purpose of organizing a hockey team named the Chicago Hockey Club.[1] Northwestern University also formed a hockey team this winter.

No records exist of any hockey games taking place in Chicago in 1900.

Cleveland, Ohio

On December 26, 1899, it was reported that there were plans to revive hockey in Cleveland, and that an interscholastic league was likely to be formed, as the Central High School had leased a plot of land to build an ice rink on, and had organized two teams.[2] The West, Central, and University Schools were also deemed likely to compete. Central High School was set to play the first game of the year on January 5, 1900, but there was no ice.

The Western Reserve University medical students formed a team, composed of Stahl, E.J. Stewart, J.R. Stewart, Scanlan, Wendler, McCurdy, and Vasha. J.R. Stewart had previously played for a Hamilton, Ontario, team, and organized a game against Hamilton, while also negotiating with other Canadian teams.[3]

Unfortunately, mild weather prevented any games from being played this winter.

Massachusetts

The sport of ice hockey replaced ice polo in Massachusetts for the 1899-1900 season.

“Efforts are being made to supplant ice polo by the Canadian hockey game in the New England Ice Polo and Hockey League. At tomorrow evening’s [Dec. 21] meeting officers will be elected and a schedule adopted. From present indications it is believed that the Canadian game will be adopted this year, as Harvard, Yale, Brown and other large colleges have taken it up. Harvard, Tech and Boston College will be invited to become members of the league. The New England Skating Association officials are anxious to promote the game of hockey among the schoolboys, and with this purpose in view they have called a meeting of the interscholastic men for Friday evening to be held at 38 Gray’s Hall, Harvard College. At last year’s meeting of the school league it was voted to substitute hockey this year for ice polo.”[4]

“At the annual meeting of the New England Ice Polo and Hockey League last evening, the league was reorganized as the New England Hockey League. The most important question to come before the meeting was the proposition to give up the old game of ice polo and adopt the Canadian game of hockey. Harvard and the other colleges have adopted the Canadian game, which has grown in popularity in this country from year to year. It was decided that the Canadian rules will govern the league games this season. A silk banner has been offered to the winning team, which must play out every scheduled game. It is expected that individual cups will be offered later in the season.

The old board of officers was abolished at the meeting and the governing power of the league will be vested in a committee of seven as follows: I.S. Clark, North Shore, chairman; Mark Lyman, Newtowne A.C.; C.A. R Lewis, Cambridge; Walde E. Chapman, Roxbury; J.E. O’Connell, Dorchester; John W. Kernan, Wakefield, and F.M. Benedict, Philips Andover.

A communication from Manager Barr of the Technology Hockey Club was received, in which he stated that Tech would be unable to enter the league, owing to a faculty regulation… Several of the league teams will meet the Technology boys during the early part of the season. Boston College will not be represented by a team this year. The Newtowne Club has arranged New York and Canadian trips, while the North Shore team will meet several New York clubs. Dorchester will make a tour through the provinces in February. A new team, to be known as the Wanderers, has been organized at Somerville, composed for the most part of Canadians who live in this city.” [5]

The Massachusetts Interscholastic and Interprepatory Hockey Leagues were also contested this winter. Arlington High School won the Interprepatory League title. The Suburban League remained an ice polo competition for 1900.

Six teams participated in the American Amateur Hockey League during the 1899-1900 season, playing a double round-robin schedule - the Brooklyn Crescents, Brooklyn Skating Club, US 1st Naval Battalion, New York Athletic Club, New York Hockey Club, and New York St. Nicholas. The Crescents won the championship, finishing undefeated.

Yale University won the American Intercollegiate Hockey Association title for the third consecutive season. The University of Pennsylvania dropped out of the league, and were replaced by Princeton University.

The New York and Long Island Interscholastic Hockey Leagues were both in operation once again. The winners - Berkeley School and Polytechnic Preparatory School, respectively - met in the New York State Interscholastic Championship on March 7. Polytechnic beat Berkeley 2-0.

McGill University from Quebec visited New York City in December, and the Ottawa Hockey Club played there in March. New York St. Nicholas traveled to Montreal, Quebec, in February. They lost to the McGill University Hockey Club 11-3 on the 22nd and Montreal AAA 5-1 the next day. The AAA team was composed of junior players.

A New York All-Star Team visited the Maritimes in late February. On the 26th and 27th, they faced the Halifax Crescents, and were beaten by scores of 12-3 and 8-1, respectively. The All-Stars lost 3-2 in overtime to the Moncton Orioles on March 1, and fell by the same score (also in overtime) to the Saint John Hockey Club on the 2nd. On March 19, the University of Buffalo hockey team went to Niagara-on-the-Lake, Ontario, and defeated the local Hockey Club 10-9.

Pennsylvania

Ice hockey was played in Pittsburgh once again this winter. The Western Pennsylvania Hockey League expanded to four teams with the addition of the Pittsburgh Bankers. The Pittsburgh Athletic Club won the championship for the second consecutive year. Pittsburgh High School also repeated as champions in the Interscholastic League.

The West Park Ice Palace in Philadelphia was closed this winter, so no hockey was played in the city itself. However, on February 22, 1900, the Quaker City Hockey Club was once again organized, with George Orton being elected captain.[7] However, it appears the team did not play any games this year.

Spokane, Washington

There was ice polo played at the Liberty Park lake in Spokane for the first time this winter. The Spokane High School formed a polo team in December 1899.[8] They had their first practice on December 29.

On January 30, the following was written in the Spokane Chronicle: “The Spokane Amateur Athletic Club has the first ice polo teams ready to play for the championship of the city. There are many good skaters in the athletic club… The club players want to organize Wednesday evening [Jan. 31] and the committee, composed of Ralph Hunt, Clarence Burch and I.M. Cornthwait, has called a meeting for 7:15 on that evening to effect an organization. Every member of the club that wishes to have a trial is urged to be present. They intend to have a list of about 20 players so that in 15 minutes they can select from the number a team to go on the ice and play a match game of polo. They challenge any and every team in the city. They intend to skate and to play while the ice lasts, and therefore challenge any team to play a match of ice polo within two days, and if not then at any time that the other team may find convenient.”[9]

A practice game was played between the Spokane Amateur Athletic Club and the High School on January 31, and there were talks of a four-team tournament being arranged with the Athletic Club, High School, Spokane Ice Polo Club, and the Blair Business College competing.[10]

On February 1, the Spokane Ice Polo Club beat the Blair Business College 7-0 at Liberty Park. A game between the Ice Polo Club and the Spokane Amateur Athletic Club, slated for the 2nd, was called off due to snow.[11]

The Spokane Ice Polo Club hoped to organize games with Greenwood, Nelson and Rossland, BC. The Spokane High School club applied to participate in the Rossland Winter Carnival in British Columbia, but they were not allowed to compete, owing to a smallpox quarantine. The players selected for the tournament were Allen Jones, Walter Hague, Louis Masurette, Percy Thompson, and Philip Gilpatrick.[12] They also sent a challenge to Nelson's second team.

On February 15, the Spokane High School club traveled to Rossland to face the Sandon (BC) team. They got blasted 16-0, in an ice hockey game. The Spokane players were under a misapprehension that hockey and ice polo were the same game, and were surprised by the differences, particularly the offside rule, which was not a term known to them, and the fact that ice hockey was played with a puck and straight sticks, whereas a ball and curved sticks were used in ice polo.[13]

Wheeling, West Virginia

"There is a probability of a hockey club being formed by local enthusiasts to play the improved game of 'shinny' on the Back river, and should the good ice continue the club will likely be a go. Among the names mentioned in connection with its organization are: Lester English, 'Billy' McCombs, Herbert Riheldaffer, and others."[14]

Wisconsin

It was reported that Oshkosh ice skaters were planning to play ice hockey on Lake Winnebago this winter.[15]
