This was the 1897-98 American ice hockey season:

Baltimore, Maryland

Five teams competed in the Baltimore Hockey League during the 1897-98 season - Johns Hopkins University, Maryland Athletic Club, University of Maryland, Northampton Hockey Club, and the Walbrook Athletic Club (who won a qualification series to earn the right to compete in the league).

On December 31, 1897, the Maryland Hockey Club defeated Yale University 3-2 at the North Avenue Ice Palace. According to The Baltimore Sun, it was “the greatest game of hockey ever seen in Baltimore, the most exciting and the most desperately contested… There have been more scientific games played at the rink, when the crack Canadian teams were there last year, but those were exhibition games, well played, but lacking the desperate earnestness that characterized the game last night. Another striking feature of last night was the intense earnestness with which the big crowd ‘rooted’ for the home team.”

The next day, Yale defeated a combination team composed of Johns Hopkins defensemen and University of Maryland forwards by the score of 2-0. On January 7, the Montclair Athletic Club of New Jersey traveled to Baltimore and beat the Maryland Hockey Club 2-1. Two days later, Montclair lost 2-1 to the Northamptons.

On January 21, the Maryland Hockey Club thrashed Princeton University 13-0. The New York Hockey Club defeated the Maryland Hockey Club 2-0 on February 4. The Maryland Hockey Club and Yale met two more times on February 21 and 22, 1898. They split the games, each side winning one by 2-1 scores.

Some of the last competitive ice hockey games at the North Avenue rink were Baltimore Hockey League matches held on March 10, 1898, between Johns Hopkins and University of Maryland, and a second game between Walbrook and the Maryland Athletic Club. Hopkins and University tied 0-0 and Walbrook defeated the Athletic Club 2–0. The league decided to not replay the tie and the championship was awarded to the University of Maryland.

On March 11 and 12, the New York Hockey Club traveled to Baltimore to play exhibition games against "All-Baltimore" teams comprised of players from teams in the Baltimore League.

The players of the Wanderer's Cricket Club took the initiative in the formation of a hockey league in Chicago, organizing a meeting with representatives from the Kenwood and Saddle and Cycle clubs. It was later reported that the Kenwoods, Eaglewoods, Chicagos and Wanderers were planning to compete.[1]

There were talks of a Winnipeg team visiting Chicago this winter. The Berlin Hockey Club of Ontario also considered a trip to the Windy City.

A meeting to elect officers for the season was set to be held on December 21. Everyone interested in hockey was invited to attend.[2]

On January 6, 1898, it was reported that the Wellington Hockey Club was eager to meet other hockey teams in Cleveland in a friendly game, to be played under Ontario Hockey Association rules. The club was headquartered at the rink located at the corner of Kennard street and Cedar avenue. Their roster was as follows: H. Powell (goal), H.W. Bell (point), B. O'Connor (cover point), D.L. The planned 1897-98 playing schedule for the Massachusetts Ice Polo League.

Ice polo remained the most popular sport in Massachusetts in 1897-98. Five teams competed in the Interscholastic League: English High, Melrose High, Somerville High, Roxbury High, and Cambridge High and Latin. The Suburban League consisted of six teams: Melrose High, Everett High, Lynn High, Winchester High, Malden High, and Medford High.

The Massachusetts Ice Polo League was once again organized, with the Newtowne Club (formerly Felton AA), Falmouth AA, Dorchester, Roxbury, Oxford, Waltham, Melrose, Wakefield, Stoneham, and Newton AA competing. The Newtowne team was reported to have won the championship. Many of the scheduled games were postponed or cancelled altogether.

The Newtowne team planned to go on a tour, on which they intended to visit New York, Philadelphia, and Washington, but it did not come off.

Michigan

Although some ice polo had previously been played, the first hockey game to take place in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula was on December 29, 1897, when the Reds and Whites from Dollar Bay played a game at the Skating Pavilion in Calumet. The game ended in a draw, neither team registering a goal. It was also reported that attempts were being made to organize a hockey team at Portage Lake.[7] A team was soon put together by some of the Mining School boys, and the Smelting Works also organized a club.[8]

On January 5, 1898, Dollar Bay beat Woodside 1-0 at Lake Linden.[9] On January 7, the two Dollar Bay clubs played in Ripley, an unincorporated community close to Houghton. According to the Daily Mining Gazette, “The game of hockey was introduced into Houghton last Friday evening [Jan. 7] by a game between two teams from Dollar Bay...the conditions were rather unfavorable, the ice being soft and the light dim in places. Then the posts down the center of the rink bothered the players considerable, but as the place was not built for the game it couldn't be helped…”[10]

The teams were as follows: White Team - L. Fissette (Goal), N. Rogers (Point), B. Kitto (Cover Point), H. Rosberg (Center), S. McGrath (CF), G. Williams (RW), E. Yates (LW). Red Team - B. Wagner (Goal), A. Penberthy (Point), F. Fernette (Cover Point), W. Middlemiss (Center), M. McGrath (CF), T. Glendening (RW), H. Yates (LW).

The rink in Ripley was known as “The Palace”, and was the first covered facility in the area.

It was reported that the crack hockey team of Marquette was considering a visit to the copper country and wanted to arrange games with various towns in the district.[11] The Laurium hockey team was eager to arrange games with outside teams.[12] The Dollar Bay club was reorganized in late January.

On February 5, the Dollar Bay and Marquette hockey teams were slated to play a game at the Palace ice rink in Dollar Bay. Two games wound up being played on this day, the second at the Mammoth ice rink at Lake Linden, and Dollar Bay won both handily (by scores of 5-0 and 2-0), thoroughly outplaying the Marquette team.[13] On February 14, Dollar Bay defeated Lake Linden 7-3.[14] The Laurium hockey team traveled to play Dollar Bay on February 23, and were defeated, 10-2.[15]

The Dollar Bay hockey club defeated the Lake Linden team at the Mammoth ice rink on March 5.[16] On March 16, the Dollar Bay team beat the Laurium Superiors at the Superior rink.[17]

The Detroit College of Medicine competed in the 1898 Peninsular Hockey League. They beat the Windsor (Ontario) Hockey Club 5-3 on February 1 and 6-0 on February 19 at the Windsor Curling Rink to win the championship.

Minnesota

Both ice hockey and ice polo were played in Minnesota this winter. The St. Paul Hockey Club planned to go on a tour of the Eastern United States, with stops in New York, Brooklyn, Washington, and Philadelphia. The trip ended up being cancelled by the team president, Richard Neely, as the club had been unable to practice much and had struggled to gather enough players to make the journey. The itinerary was set to be as follows: Play the Washington Hockey Club in Washington on January 20, before playing in Philadelphia on the 21st, and then heading to New York to play the New York Athletic Club, and the Brooklyn Crescents.

A picked St. Cloud hockey team was set to play St. Paul on February 22.

The second season of the American Amateur Hockey League took place during the 1897-98 season. The Montclair Athletic Club from New Jersey joined the league, replacing the Brooklyn Crescents. The new York Athletic Club won the title, beating New York St. Nicholas 2-1 in a tiebreaker game on March 26, 1898. The New York State Interscholastic Hockey League was also organized again.

On January 7, the Brooklyn Skating Club defeated an aggregation of hockey players who designated themselves as the “Yale Hockey Team” by the score of 4-1 at the Clermont Avenue Rink.

The Welland Hockey Club of Ontario wanted to play the Buffalo Olympics in Buffalo this winter. There wasn't much hockey played in the city in 1898, with no records of local games being found.

A competition known as the American Intercollegiate Hockey Association was played between Brown, Columbia, and Yale, at the Clermont Avenue Rink in Brooklyn. The teams competed for a trophy offered by Mr. Ireland of the Brooklyn Skating Club. Yale defeated Columbia 4-1 in the decisive match to earn the trophy.

North Dakota

The Langdon Hockey Club was formed in Langdon, North Dakota, in January 1898. The club was said to have been given a "vigorous start by a dozen or more enthusiastic skaters at the rink".[18] On the 27th, it was reported that they had played a number of friendly games during the week with their new sticks.[19]

Pennsylvania

In December 1897, the West Park Ice Palace at 52nd and Jefferson opened in Philadelphia. The American Hockey League of Philadelphia was soon established and began play in January 1898. Four teams participated in the league - Haverford College Grammar School (who won the championship), Wayne School, Philadelphia Dental College, and the University of Pennsylvania. The Philadelphia Interscholastic Hockey League was also formed.

The Maryland Hockey Club traveled to Philadelphia to face Quaker City at the Ice Palace on April 1, 1898. The hosts were victorious by a score of 5-0, although it should have only been 3-0, as two of the goals allowed in the first half were wide of the goal posts.
