This was the 1905-06 American ice hockey season:

Chicago, Illinois

The 1906 Chicago City Championship was contested by four teams: Calumet Lacrosse Club, Kenwood Country Club, Riverside Hockey Club, and the South Park Skating Club. Other active teams in the city included the Prairie Avenue Hockey Club and the Monarch Athletic Club.

Colorado

The Cooper Lake Hockey Club reorganized in early January, and challenged the All-Canadians to a game on the 7th. Due to mild weather conditions, no games are recorded to have been played between the two. A women's game was played between Denver and the University of Colorado on December 17, 1905. Hockey was also played in Leadville and Salida.

The planned playing schedule for the New England Ice Hockey League

The New England Ice Hockey League was once again organized for the 1905-06 season. It was planned to begin play on December 27, but as of January 22, not a single game had been playing, owing to mild weather. Only one league game is recorded to have taken place. The following teams were slated to participate in the league: Roxbury Hockey Club, Dorchester Hockey Club, Boston Wanderers, Somerville Hockey Club, Melrose Hockey Club, Franklin AA, and the Boston Hockey Club.

The high school competitions were also contested this winter.

Michigan

The Portage Lakes Hockey Club, Calumet Miners, and Michigan Soo Indians once again competed in the International Professional Hockey League, which also featured the Canadian Soo and the Pittsburgh Pros.

The Border Hockey League was formed for the 1905-06 season. It consisted of the Detroit Athletic Club and the Essex, Amherstburg, Tilbury, and Chatham, Ontario teams. In early February, the Essex team withdrew from the league. The Chatham Hockey Club won the league championship.

The St. Paul Victorias won the Twin City Hockey League for the fourth year in a row, defeating Mechanic Arts in a single game. The Victorias also retained the Minnesota State title.

Norfolk, Virginia

Description of the Norfolk Ice Palace in the December 2, 1905, edition of the Free-Lance.

The Norfolk Ice Palace, located on East Main Street, opened on December 9, 1905. Early in the month, it was noted that arrangements were being made for games between Virginia and Carolina and Yale and Princeton.[2] On December 15, it was reported that the first ice hockey team in the south had been formed at the Ice Palace. J. Saunders Taylor was elected captain and the team was set to begin practicing at once. It was also noted that there were plans to form a second team, and that players from the two teams would be selected to play in an ice hockey tournament at the St. Nicholas Rink in New York in February 1906.[3] On December 21, it was reported that the hockey teams from the Worden and the Truxtun torpedo boats had organized, and were planning to play a match at the rink. There was noted to be a considerable rivalry between the seamen. St. Paul's of Portsmouth and the Norfolk High School were set to play a game the next Saturday.[4]

On December 23, the following was written in the Virginian-Pilot: "At the palace last night the hockey teams from the torpedo boat destroyers Worden and Truxtun played a game in the presence of a large crowd. The contest was very exciting. Several of the officers from the war vessels at the yard were present. The superior officers of the navy ships believe in encouraging athletics and sports and the enlisted men have ample opportunity at the ice palace since the management has been very liberal with Uncle Sam's fighting men."[5]

A series was arranged between the Quaker City Hockey Club of Philadelphia and Princeton University, the Ice Palace management paying $1000 to bring them down to Norfolk. The two clubs took part in the first game of hockey ever played in the South on December 29. It was reported that "The Southerners were very much enthused with hockey and local teams are to be formed".[6] Princeton won the three game series 2-1. There were also hopes of bringing Yale and the Brooklyn Crescents to the Ice Palace for a series later in the season.[7]

In early January, the manager of the ice palace was receiving numerous applications for the Norfolk hockey team No. 2.[8]

On January 4, 1906, it was reported that the Norfolk Country Club was likely to meet a team from Portsmouth at the Ice Palace within a week, and that they had been practicing vigorously in preparation for the game. It was noted that William N. White, a promoter of sports in Portsmouth probably going to be the captain or manager of the team. Instead of seven men aside, each team was to have five players so there would be more room to keep the puck in motion. A series of 12 games was planned.[9] The management of the ice palace offered a magnificent trophy to go to the winners.

After the series, it was proposed to organized a hockey league, composed of teams from Norfolk, Portsmouth, Berkley, Newport News, Hampton and Old Point, with the teams playing every week until the close of the season. The first three matches were set to take place from January 11-13, but they were postponed to January 18-20, as Captain White of Portsmouth had not had sufficient time to practice with his team. Instead, the Country Club met the Washington Nationals, captained by LeMat, for three games from the 11th-13th.[10] The first game was broken up by a power failure, but the Country Club blanked the Nationals 5-0 in the second meeting. Bruce scored three goals for the Country Club.[11] The following night, the Country club once again whipped the Nationals, this time by the score of 8-1.[12] On January 16, it was reported that the Portsmouth Hockey Club had begun practicing for their upcoming series with Norfolk.[13]

On January 18, Norfolk beat Portsmouth 2-0 in a game where neither team was regular, and was more of a scrub affair than the beginning of the championship series.[14] The games scheduled for January 19 and 20 were cancelled, as two of the Portsmouth players had sustained injuries in the first game. It was also reported that the management of the ice palace was in correspondence with a Baltimore hockey team, and hoped to meet them for a series at the Ice Palace.[15] Norfolk again defeated Portsmouth, this time by a score of 7-4, on February 1.[16] On February 7, Norfolk blasted the Nationals 10-0 in a game played as part of an ice carnival, that was held for the benefit of the Confederate monument under the auspices of Pickett-Buchanan Chapter, Daughters of the Confederacy.[17] Four days later, it was reported that there were plans to continue the series between Norfolk and Portsmouth.[18] However, no records exist of further games taking place.

The Hannah Hockey Club joined the Southern Manitoba Hockey League, and were set to play three games with the Manitoba clubs during the season. Hannah easily defeated Grand Forks on January 26.

Ohio

The Amazon Canoe Club of Cincinnati scheduled games against Cleveland and Hamilton, Ontario.[19] Neither wound up being played. The Pleasant Ridge, Advent Memorial Athletic Club, and Covington Hockey Club were also formed in Cincinnati. In Cleveland, the Landon Athletic Club and Imperials were active. Landon was slated to face the Canton Marine AC in Canton on February 18, but the game did not come off.

The Pittsburgh Pros once again competed in the International Professional Hockey League, which was also composed of teams from Michigan and Ontario.

The Quaker City Hockey Club returned to action this winter. They played a series against Princeton University in Norfolk, Virginia, in late December, losing two of the three games. Quaker City roster: Rhoades (goal), Riley (cover), White (rover), Cooke (center), Bulleu (right wing), Orton (left wing), Bryor. Quaker City also wanted to play in Pittsburgh on February 2 and 3.

Spokane, Washington

In Spokane, the Star Shingle Company opened an artificial ice rink at their plant on February 6, 1906. The rink has an ice surface of 200 by 88 feet. On February 7, the first hockey practice took place. The Spokane Amateur Athletic Club formed a team, and another club known as the Independents (who soon changed their name to the Eagles) was formed. Other possible teams were announced as being the Spokane High School, Blair Business College, and Gonzaga University, but none wound up playing. Plans to form a Spokane City League with two Spokane AAC teams, Gonzaga, High School, and the Independents were also abandoned.

The first game was played between the Spokane AAC and the Eagles on February 26. The Rossland, British Columbia team then came to Spokane to play two exhibition games.
