The Chicago Hockey Association, which was affiliated with the Central Amateur Athletic Union, held its annual meeting on December 13, 1917. The Illinois Athletic Club formed an ice hockey team again this winter and hoped to arrange a game against the Calumet team. They didn't wind up facing them, but played an independent schedule of seven games. The Great Lakes Naval Training Station, located near Chicago, had a hockey team in 1918.

The Minneapolis Park Hockey League was organized again for the 1917-18 season. It was divided into three divisions, Senior, and Junior 1 and 2. The Vertex won the Senior Division, while the Lagoons and Harriets claimed the Junior Division 1 and 2 titles, respectively. The St. Paul Northern Pacifics defeated the Vertex in a series for the Twin City Championship. The Logan Park League was also in existence.
There were plans for the St. Paul Wanderers and Duluth West Ends to play a two-game series in St. Paul in February 1918, but nothing came of these.

At a special meeting of the International Skating Union, held in New York City on October 28, arrangements were made for the control of amateur hockey under the auspices of the Amateur Athletic Union. The conference was attended by delegates of the various skating and hockey organizations of the East, Middle West, Pacific Coast and New England and tentative schedules for round robin and inter-city play were considered.
The United States National Hockey League was eventually formed, run by the ISU, and was made up of the New York Wanderers, Pittsburgh AA, and two teams from Boston. The American Amateur Hockey League also returned for its final season of play.
In Buffalo, the Municipal League was contested. Various high school leagues were held as well.
