The American Amateur Hockey League was contested for the third year in a row. The same five teams competed in 1898-99 as in the previous season. The Brooklyn Skating Club won the championship, finishing with an undefeated record of 8-0.

The American Intercollegiate Hockey Association arranged a championship for the second consecutive season. Brown, Columbia, and Yale were joined in the competition by the University of Pennsylvania. Yale once again claimed first place.

The New York Interscholastic Hockey League was also organized this winter. The following teams participated in it: Berkeley School, Columbia Grammar School, Cutler School, De La Salle Institute, Dreisler School, and Sachs School. The Cutler School won the title and faced the Haverford College Grammar School for the American Interscholastic Hockey Championship in Philadelphia.

The Long Island Interscholastic Hockey League was another competition in existence.

The American Hockey League of Philadelphia and the Philadelphia Interscholastic Hockey League were contested for the second consecutive season. The University of Pennsylvania also competed in the American Intercollegiate Hockey Association (see New York section for results).

The Haverford Grammar School, winners of the Philadelphia Interscholastic League, faced Cutler School, the New York Interscholastic champions, in Philadelphia on March 10.

An artificial ice rink at the Duquesne Gardens opened in Pittsburgh on January 23, 1899. It featured a 26,000 square foot ice surface, which was nearly 50 feet longer than the modern-day rinks in the National Hockey League, and utilized state-of-the-art refrigeration and resurfacing technologies.

With the opening of the rink, the Western Pennsylvania Hockey League and the Pittsburgh Interscholastic League were revived. Both had abruptly ceased when the Schenley Park Casino burned down in December 1896. The Pittsburgh Athletic Club won the WPHL while Pittsburgh High School earned the Interscholastic League championship.

Queen’s University from Kingston, Ontario, visited Pittsburgh in March, playing four games local teams, and winning them all.
