The 1901-02 Portage Lakes Hockey Club

The Portage Lakes Hockey Club was very active this winter. They called the Ripley Ice Palace home. Portage Lakes defeated the Kenwood Country Club for the Western Championship, and later faced the Pittsburgh Athletic Club for the Championship of the United States. The teams split the games, and it was planned for Portage to go to Pittsburgh to play off the tie, but this did not materialize.

The Warren Avenue Hockey Club wanted to arrange games for Christmas and New Years mornings.[1] The Detroit Wholesalers' Hockey League was formed for the 1902 season. The first game took place on January 10, a 2-2 tie between Fletcher Hardware Co. and Mitchell, Moody & Garton.[2] There were six teams total in the league: Fletcher, MM&G, A. Krolik & Co., Freeman, Delamater & Co., Buhl Sons & Co., and Standart Bros.[3]

The Michigan College of Mines supposedly had a hockey team that played informal games in 1901-02.

Spokane, Washington

The Spokane Hockey Club organized for the season on December 11, 1901. Virgil Pownall was elected captain. He had been the captain of the Winnipeg Stars the previous year. Spokane planned to enter the hockey tournament at the Rossland Winter Carnival.[8] In mid-December, the club took advantage of the fine ice at Liberty Park to practice, in preparation for the carnival.[9] The YMCA formed a hockey team, and it was planned for them to play a game against the Spokane Hockey Club.[10]

Lack of ice prevented the Spokane Hockey Club from practicing much, and the team elected not to participate in the Rossland Winter Carnival, and the team disbanded in mid-February.[11]

Utah

At Mellen's pond, in Salt Lake City, on December 25, 1901, a picked team defeated the Mellen Mud Hens 5-4. The West Side Hockey club had been slated to face the Mud Hens, but failed to appear for the game.[12] More hockey games were played in Salt Lake City over the course of the winter.

On December 11, 1901, it was reported that there plans for reorganizing the Milwaukee Hockey Club. The team organized the previous year was discontinued after the ice was broken up north of the dam in the Milwaukee river by the boat employed by the North Lakes Ice Company.[13] The Milwaukee Tennis Club decided to have a skating rink on their grounds on Prospect avenue and formed a hockey team.[14] Milwaukee planned to host a skating tournament in late February, with hockey games between local clubs taking place on February 22.[15]
