The San Francisco Winter Garden opened on October 27, 1916, with a hockey game between the Grays, composed of local amateurs and professionals from the Northwest, and the Maroons. The season closed on June 29, 1917.

Minnesota

The Camdens
The planned playing schedule for the Minneapolis Park League

It was planned for the St. Paul Athletic Club, Calumet, and the American Soo to compete in the American Amateur Hockey Association, but the league did not come together, as Calumet withdrew, and St. Paul played an independent schedule for 1916-17. The Minneapolis All-Stars, led by Nick Kahler, were another independent team. They got blasted in two games against St. Paul for the Twin City Championship.

The Minneapolis Park Hockey League was divided into Class A and B. In Class A, the Minneapolis Vertex won all five games to win the group. The Camdens came in first in Class B, edging out the Lake Shores, and earned the Struck Cup. The following teams played in the two divisions: Class A - Lake Harriet Hockey Club, Minneapolis Vertex, Maple Hill, North Commons; Class B - Deephaven, Camdens, Alpha Neau, Glenwood Commercial Club, Glen Athletic Club, Lake Shores. The Minneapolis Park Junior League was won by the Bryants, who went 4-0, finishing ahead of the Buffaloes and Raccoons, who tied for second. The Duluth Amateur Hockey League was also in operation.

Pittsburgh Athletic Association

The Pittsburgh Athletic Association, based out of Duquesne Gardens, had a very strong team in 1916-17. They played an independent schedule, spanning from November 24 to April 7, and won 37 of 40 games. The Pittsburgh Amateur Hockey League was also contested. It was comprised of the Young Men's Business Club (who won the title), Pennsylvania Lines, Westinghouse Club, Greenfield Hockey Club, Duquesne Light Company, and Independent Hockey Club. The Pittsburgh High School League was won by Fifth Avenue.

With the opening of the Winter Palace rink in Philadelphia, ice hockey was revived in the city. The Philadelphia Hockey Association was formed with Harry Lawrence as president and George W. Orton as president. The first and second teams of the Merion Cricket and Philadelphia Cricket Clubs and the Wanderers made up the league. The Cynwyd Hockey Club, Moorestown Hockey Club, Haverford College, Swarthmore College, University of Pennsylvania, and the Pickering Hockey Club applied for membership later in the season. The Wanderers won the league championship, the famous Hobey Baker leading the way. There was also an interscholastic league, composed of Chestnut Hill, Episcopal, Haverford, St. Luke's, Central, and West Philadelphia High competing. Episcopal won.

St. Louis, Missouri

The St. Louis Winter Garden opened on November 25, 1916, allowing hockey to be played in St. Louis for the first time since 1910. On December 4, 25 players took part in the first hockey practice at the rink, and a scrimmage was played between the Country and Racquet clubs. Another practice was held a week later, with players from the Racquet Club, Country Club, Missouri Athletic Association, Columbian Athletic Club, St. Louis AAA, and the Gillespies (backed by hockey enthusiast Robert M. Gillespie) participating.

The St. Louis Hockey League was formed, with the Country Club, St. Louis Hockey Club, and Ben Millers competing. 2,000 spectators watched the opening game, played on January 10. The Hockey Club was renamed Sunset Hill before their February 7 game. After this game, the rink management suspended the league, and no more games were played for the season.
