This was the 1908-09 American ice hockey season:
Chicago, Illinois
The Illinois Athletic Club played two games against the Chicago Hockey Club this winter. They also traveled to St. Louis, Missouri, and defeated the local Auditorium Club twice. The club hoped to face St. Paul for the Central Western Championship, but no game took place.
With plans in place for an artificial rink to be opened in Chicago by the fall of 1909, a group of baseball magnates discussed forming a six-team hockey league for the 1909-10 season, featuring three teams in Chicago, and one each in St. Louis, Pittsburgh, and Cleveland.[1] There were also plans to create a hockey league with teams selected from Chicago, Boston, New York, Pittsburgh, Cleveland, Columbus, Atlanta, St. Louis and Houghton.[2] John T. McNamara, the former owner of the Portage Lakes Hockey Club, wanted to found an international professional league composed of clubs from Chicago, Cleveland, St. Louis, Columbus, Pittsburgh, New York, Boston, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, and Quebec.[3]

Ohio
Three teams participated in the Northern Ohio Hockey Association during the 1908-09 season, the Cleveland Athletic Club, Crescents, and Thistles. On January 8, the Cleveland Athletic Club withdrew from the league, claiming they did not want to jeopardize their amateur status. They were replaced by a new team, the Clevelands, who assumed their place in the standings. The Crescents won the championship and the Spalding Trophy.

St. Louis, Missouri
The Auditorium Ice Rink opened on the site of the former Ice Palace in December 1908, and hockey was revived in St. Louis. An interscholastic league was organized with the Central High School, McKinley High School, Manual Training School, and Smith Academy competing. The Auditorium and St. Louis Skating Club's were formed. The Racquet, Country, and University clubs also planned to field teams this winter, but none materialized.
There were talks of the Yale University team playing in St. Louis over Christmas, but due to a full schedule, they were unable to come. The first game of hockey since 1903 was played in St. Louis on December 28. The Auditorium Club defeated a team from Winnipeg, Manitoba on January 18, and lost twice to the Illinois Athletic Club from Chicago in early February. The Auditorium closed two days after the series, as the building's owners were losing lots of money.
