History of hockey in Qatar
The Qatar Ice Hockey Federation was founded in 2010, and the country joined the IIHF on May 18, 2012.[1] The Qatari capital of Doha has two ice rinks - the Godolania Ice Rink in the Aspire Zone and the City Center Ice Rink at West Bay.
The Qatar International Ice Hockey League was founded by expats in 2003. League games are usually played at the Godolania Ice Rink located in the Villagio Shopping Mall. Due to the wide range in skill levels of the players, the league is divided into two divisions (A and B). The international Desert Cup tournament has also been contested yearly since 2007.
The national team played its first international game at the Desert Cup on February 28, 2014, losing to Oman 2-1. Later the same day, they defeated Bahrain 3-0 for their inaugural victory. Qatar participated in the Gulf Ice Hockey Championship in 2014, finishing third, and hosted the 2016 tournament. The hosts made it to the finals, where they were defeated 5-0 by the United Arab Emirates.[2]
