History of hockey in Morocco
The Moroccan Ice Hockey Association is the governing body of ice hockey in the country. Morocco joined the IIHF on May 22, 2010.[1]
Morocco's first ice rink opened at the MegaMall in Rabat in 2005. Mrini Khalid, president of the national federation, created the first ice hockey club in the country, the Capitals de Rabat. With the help of his brother and a few players, he opened a hockey school as well. The Capitals participated in the prestigious Quebec International Pee-Wee Tournament in 2006. They were and the first Arab/African team to participate in the event.[2]
The federation lists seven active clubs in the country: Eagles de Casablanca, Fisher de Mohammedia, Huskies de Kenitra, Pirates de Sale, Bears de Casablanca, Buffalos de Casablanca, and the Capitals de Rabat. There is no national hockey league in Morocco, although informal games are played, and Rabat hosted the 2012 Ain Soltane International Tournament.
In June 2008, the Moroccan National Team participated in the inaugural Arab Cup of Ice Hockey held in Abu Dhabi. They finished in third place at the tournament, finishing in third place with a final record of 2-3.[3]
