Ringhoffer Pokal
The Ringhoffer Pokal was a competition staged in Prague between 1911 and 1922. It was also known as the Austrian Championship and the International Austrian Championship.
Berliner Schlittschuhclub won the ice hockey tournament three times in total. Their last victory, in 1922, earned them the title for good.
History
During the time of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Prague was the stronghold of Austrian hockey. The tournament was organized by DEHG Prag and the cup was donated by the Austrian industrialist Ringhoffer family.
The Ringhoffer Pokal was first contested in 1911, prior to the establishment of the Austrian Ice Hockey Federation (OEHV), as a bandy tournament. It basically served as the Austrian Championship, although it is unclear why German clubs from Berlin and Leipzig were allowed to participate.
The bandy competition was discontinued in 1913 was the Austrian Federation set up its own championship. The Ringhoffer Pokal was then converted to an ice hockey tournament and DEHG Prag donated another cup with the same name to be competed for.
In February 1914, the federation reached an agreement with DEHG Prag. DEHG joined the OEHV, which consisted of one other Czech member (Deutscher Fussballclub Prag), but was given the assurance it would still be allowed to compete against non-member teams, which was actually not allowed by the statutes of the association.
The bandy tournament was then reintroduced in 1914, although the Austrian State Championship served as the official championship. Separate bandy and ice hockey editions of the Ringhoffer Pokal were contested in 1914.
DEHG Prag was later told not to carry out Austrian Championships anymore, thus the Ringhoffer Pokal was discontinued for 1915. It was later contested as an ice hockey competition in 1922.
