Vienna Ice Hockey Championship
The Vienna Ice Hockey Championship was a bandy hockey competition held in the Austrian capital of Vienna from 1912-1919.
History
The Austrian Ice Hockey Federation (OEHV) was established in January 1912. As the focus of ice hockey in the Austro-Hungarian Empire was in Prague at the time, and several championships had been contested there in recent years, the federation set-up the Vienna Championship.
The competition helped mold Vienna into a key location for bandy/hockey in Austria-Hungary.
The Wiener Sport Club won the first two Vienna Championships held in 1913 and 1914. No champion was declared in 1915 as the schedule was not completed.
Wiener EV went on to win the 1916 and 1917 championships in dominant fashion. The 1918 Vienna Championship was not contested as artificial ice production was prohibited. The lighting of outdoor rinks was also banned, so the clubs were forced to stop at dusk.
The lighting ban was repealed on February 21, 1918, but the championship could not be played regardless, as there were strong winds blowing off the ice.
The sixth Vienna Championship was staged in 1919. It was won by Wiener EV, who claimed their third title.
The championship was intended to be played again in 1919-20, but this wound up not materializing.
