The Rice University Owls
Rice in action

The Houston Amateur League was once again contested in 1938-39. The Rice team's season was summarized in the 1939 Campanile: "Paced by Gelbert, McKee, Blocker, Ivey, Mauldin, Gooch, McCants and Louie Girard, the Ice Owls were fortunate in uncovering a talented new goalie in John Bolles and plenty of good reserves for their gruelling pastime.

The squad look an early lead before injuries and two close defeats knocked them out of the running for the title. The climax of the sea on came on January 15, with the Owls tangling with the Lone Stars before 1100 rabid onlookers- the league lead in the balance. Rice made a last attempt to come from a one point deficit in the final period, hut failed lo outguess Studdert, the Stars' scrapping goalie.

An injury lo Freddie Mauldin and lack of proper practice facilities seriously handicapped the skaters' potency in later games."
