The Spanish Championship was first contested in 1923. It was held until 1926, before ceasing after the closure of the Palacio del Hielo y del Automovil. A second division called the "Segunda categoria" was also staged in 1925. Azul Hockey Club won the inaugural 1923 Championship, and Club Alpino Español claimed the next three titles.
The championship was later restarted in 1953 and was held annually until 1957. Club Alpino Nuria was also declared Spanish champions in 1961. The Catalonian Championship was first played in 1954 and was contested until 1961. Following an 11-year hiatus, ice hockey returned to Spain in 1972 and the championship was held once again. The Liga Nacional de Hockey Hielo was created as the national league competition for the 1972-73 season.
During the 1950s and 1960s, Club Alpino Nuria won a total of three Spanish national titles, FEMSA de Madrid claimed two championships, and Atlético Club de Madrid won once. Nuria also won the 1959 Spanish Winter Games ice hockey tournament.
