The United States Amateur Hockey Association, which replaced the International Skating Union as the governing body for ice hockey in America, established the country's first true national league for the 1920-21 season. 12 teams, divided into three divisions, competed in the league in its inaugural season.

The Chicago Hockey Association had a league for the 1920-21 season, featuring six teams. The North Shore League was also in existence, composed of the Highland Park Wanderers, Evanston, Winnetka, Kenilworth, Skokie, and Lake Forest. Due to mild weather conditions, only a few games were actually played this winter.
