The Montana State Hockey League was contested by five teams and won by the Montana School of Mines for the second consecutive year.

The Spokane Aces were an independent team formed for the 1939-40 season. They are only recorded to have played in one game.

Texas

The Houston Amateur League was once again contested at the Polar Wave Ice Palace, and featured five teams for 1939-40. The Texas Ice Palace opened in Beaumont in January 1940, and a local team known as the Texas Rangers was formed.
