BBC Grandstand TV Trophy
The BBC Grandstand TV Trophy was a competition organized and saw certain games televised by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC). This British tournament was contested during the mid-1960s.
History
The first edition was held during the 1963-64 season. Eight teams - the Altrincham Aces, Ayr Rangers, Brighton Tigers, Durham Wasps, Fife Flyers, Glasgow Flyers, Paisley Mohawks, and the Wembley Lions - participated in the inaugural competition. It utilized a knockout format and saw the Fife Flyers defeat the Wembley Lions in the final, played in Wembley, by a score of 5-4.
Brighton won the Trophy in 1964-65, and the competition was organized in a league format for 1965-66. The Ayr Rangers, Edinburgh Royals, Fife Flyers, and Paisley Mohawks competed in this edition. The final, played in Kirkcaldy after the completion of the league portion, was won by the Paisley Mohawks, 4-1 over the Fife Flyers.
The third and last edition was played in 1966-67, reverting back to the knockout format used during the 1963-64 competition. It again consisted of four teams - the Fife Flyers, Paisley Mohawks, Perth Blackhawks, and the Wembley Lions. Kirkcaldy hosted the final as they had the previous year, with the Fife Flyers defeating the Wembley Lions 3-2 on January 7, 1967, in Kirkcaldy. The Lions had beaten the Perth Blackhawks 15-4 in the semifinal on November 25, 1966.
