Union Hollabrunn forfeited their participation in the competition.

The two games between WEV and EKE would were scheduled to be played before January 27 to allow the final round to be organized. The two clubs asked the federation for a postponement due to an ongoing ice show that took up the best time slots at the main rink in Vienna. The federation refused the request by pointing out that the provincial clubs managed to finish their championships without artificial ice, while there were two artificial rinks available for use in the capital.

Until the last moment, it was not clear if the first game played between the two clubs on January 31 would be official or not. As the Viennese clubs threatened to withdraw from the championship, the federation sent no referees to the game. 1,500 spectators attended the first match, which was the last significant turnout for an ice hockey game in Vienna for many years. The sport was then relegated to the secondary rink without any grandstands.

The controversy continued and the two clubs, protesting against their exclusion, threatened not to make their players available for the national team. Eventually, the controversy was resolved, with Engelmann, the winner of the two matches, advancing to play in the national final, and the Viennese players went to the World Championships.
