The Slovenian Championship was played for the first time in 1949. Hockey was now played in six different cities (including Maribor, who did not field a team in the championship). The best of the new clubs was Jesenice, where the first hockey demonstrations had taken place a decade earlier. The name of the club was a tribute to Jože Gregorčič, a Communist who fought during the Spanish Civil War and was the leader of the Jesenice Partisan Battalion during World War II (he died in 1942 in a Nazi hunt). | |||

The 1948–49 Yugoslav Ice Hockey League season was the eighth season of the Yugoslav Ice Hockey League, the top level of ice hockey in Yugoslavia. Nine teams participated in the league, and Mladost won the championship.
The qualification rounds were held in Planica on January 23 and 24, 1949. The final tournament was staged in Ljubljana from January 27-29, 1949.
Qualification round
First round
- Tekstilac Varazdin 6 - HK Belgrade 5 (OT)
- Zagreb 11 - Korana Karlovac 2
- Spartak Subotica 8 - Naprijed Sisak 2
The winners advanced to the final round while the losers were placed in Group C of the championship.
Final round

- HK Partizan 9 - Zagreb 0
- Mladost 17 - Spartak Subotica 3
The winners advanced to Group A of the championship while the losers were placed in Group B.
