SC Lyon was an ice hockey team in Lyon, France. They were founded in 1903 and played in the Ligue Magnus from 1906-1908, before folding.[1]
History
The opening of the Palais des Glace à Lyon (Lyon Ice Palace) in 1903 allowed for the creation of the first ice hockey teams outside of Paris, where Hockey Club de Paris and Club des Patineurs de Paris had been formed.
The most important of the newly-founded Lyon clubs was SC Lyon. They played in four matches against CPP in 1903, winning two and losing one, with one score missing. In subsequent years they faced various Lyon-based sides, including FC Lyon and UVF Lyon.
SC Lyon played Club des Patineurs de Paris several times in 1906, defeating them 4-3 on January 20 and falling 2-1 on the 22nd. Later in the year, on December 22, CPP defeated Lyon 4-3.
A month later, the two clubs faced off with the inaugural French Championship at stake. Lyon defeated the Paris side handily, earning the national title with an 8-2 victory. The following year, CPP enacted their revenge on Lyon, winning the 1908 French Championship 2-1 in overtime.
The Lyon Ice Palace closed in 1908, leading to the dissolution of SC Lyon and the cessation of the French Championship until 1912. Some former members of the club went on to play for FC Lyon, who played the sport on natural ice.
