Icelandic Championship
The Icelandic Championship was a competition held in Iceland prior to the formation of the Icelandic Hockey League for the 1991-92 season.
History
The first, unofficial Icelandic competition was played as a "town competition" (bæjakeppni) between Skautafélag Akureyrar and Skautafélag Reykjavíkur in 1967. There was also a "rapid competition" (hraðkeppni) played. Official town competitions began a year later and continued annually until 1971. There was also a "cup competition" (bikarkeppni) played in 1970.
Play resumed in 1979 and an "Islandsmeistaratitilinn" (Island Competition) was also contested in 1980 and 1982. There was a tournament played in 1986. The last town competition was held in 1991 and the Icelandic Hockey League was contested for the first time the following year.
