Swiss National League Cup
The Swiss National League Cup was a competition held in Switzerland only for the 1972 season. Teams from the National League A and the National League B took part in the tournament. The previous national cup had last been held in 1966.
The new cup competition was created as the national leagues were completed in January, due to the Swiss sending a team to Nagano for the 1972 Winter Olympics, with a roster replete with players playing in their homeland leagues.
The absence of key players who were away for the Olympics took a toll on several squads. HC La Chaux-de-Fonds, the NLA champion, was forced to play with their second team, as so many of their players were wearing the Swiss colors in Nagano. They were routed in the 1/8 finals by HC Neuchatel. HC Lugano, who was also down several players, lost in the 1/8 finals as well to HC Davos. The same fate befell EHC Kloten, who despite only being down one player from their usual squad, was defeated by EHC Uzwil.
