The 1961-62 East German 1. Liga season was the 10th season of the second-level competition in East Germany. Seven teams, divided into two groups, participated in the league.

A fourth club, ASG Vorwärts Crimmitschau, withdrew prior to the start of the season.

Oberliga Promotion

Relegation

As only three teams took part in Group 1 this year, SC Einheit Dresden - the fourth place finisher in the second group - was set to be relegated; however, due to the withdrawal of several teams, it was allowed to remain in the 1. Liga for 1962-63.
