The 1959-60 East German 1. Liga season was the eighth season of the second-level competition in East Germany. 11 teams, divided into two groups, participated in the league, with the top team in each group qualifying for the Liga Championship, which was won by SC Empor Rostock. This won them a spot in the Relegation round of the DDR-Oberliga.
