The Maakuntasarja included the teams of Uusimaa, Hame, Satakunta, Kymenlaakso and Pohjois-Savo districts. Jyvaskylan Palloilijat was also included in the Pohjois-Savo district. The matches were conducted in such a way that first the teams from each district qualified among themselves according to the cup system, and a round-rodin series was played between the three teams that made it to the finals, which were held in Hameenlinna.

The 1947-48 SM-sarja season was the 17th season of the SM-sarja, the top level of ice hockey in Finland. Seven teams participated in the league, and Tarmo Hameenlinna won the championship.
