The 1973-74 Regionalliga season operated with only a Northern Group. After the introduction of the 2nd Bundesliga this season, almost all Regionalliga clubs moved up to the Oberliga. In the north, a new regional league was formed, which now operated as the fourth division. In the south, there were still the state leagues, i.e. the Bavarian league and the Baden-Württemberg league, as fourth divisions of play. Only in the following season was the Regionalliga South played again.
