The '''Tie Cup Series''' was a single elimination knock out tournament held between the top four teams of the St. John's Senior Hockey League. The series was started in 1921 and lasted until 1960. The event was dominated by the St. Bon's team who won the championship 25 times. At least five different versions of the award was used as the trophies were retired after one team won it three times. All five were retired when St. Bon's won each of the trophies for the third time in 1925, 1930, 1933, 1938, and 1945 respectively.
The 1937 event may have been cancelled due to artificial ice being installed at the Prince's Rink during that year. The event was not held in 1942 or 1943. The event was likely cancelled due to the arena burning down in 1941 and the fact that World War II was going on at the time.

The St. John's Senior Hockey League was formed in St. John's, Newfoundland, with seven teams in January 1899. From 1900-1902, the winners of the league received the Hunter Hockey Cup. The Victorias won it all three years, earning the trophy permanently.
The Boyle Trophy was awarded as the championship trophy to the league champions from 1904 to 1971. It was donated by Sir Charles Cavendish Boyle, who served as the governor of Newfoundland from 1901 to 1904. The trophy was originally intended to be an intercolonial competition between Newfoundland and the Canadian Maritime provinces. This would not come to be and the trophy became the championship trophy for St. John's senior hockey and stayed as such until the senior hockey league collapsed in 1971. The trophy was in limbo after the league collapsed. And in a move that upset many the trophy became the Newfoundland Provincial Boys 4A High School championship trophy starting with the 1984-85 school year.
