The South Australia Ice Hockey Association, currently trading as Ice Hockey South Australia is the governing body of ice hockey in South Australia, Australia. The South Australia Ice Hockey Association is a branch of Ice Hockey Australia.

Background

Ice hockey was first played in a primitive form in the South Australian capital of Adelaide in 1904. All activities ceased after the Adelaide Glaciarium was converted into a roller skating rink in 1907.

Action from the 1963-64 season.

The next rink in Adelaide did not open until 1959. The facility, located upstairs in an old building, was called the St. Moritz Rink. Starting in 1963-64, there was an in-house league competition played at the rink. The teams from the inaugural season were: Senior Division: Falcons, Magpies, Redwings, Tigers, All Stars and Maple Leafs. PeeWee Division: Blackhawks, Lil' Devils and Saints. The first premiership for the Seniors was won by the Maple Leafs, and the PeeWees was claimed by the Lil' Devils. The league eventually consisted of the Redwings, Falcons, Tigers and Blackhawks teams.

The South Australia Ice Hockey Association (SAIHA) was formed as the South Australian state branch for Ice Hockey Australia. It is responsible for organising the five state leagues across the three different age groups.[1][2] It is also responsible for selecting the state teams to compete in the national tournaments.[2]

SAIHA operates its leagues out of the Ice Arena in Thebarton, Adelaide, South Australia.[1] Teams are fielded in the leagues by six clubs – the Adelaide Blackhawks Ice Hockey Club, Redwings Ice Hockey Club, Adelaide Falcons, Adelaide Ravens, Adelaide Tigers Ice Hockey Club, and the Adelaide Vintage Reds.[3] The associations current president is Steve Wise.[4]
