1936

On June 16, 1936 it was reported that the Old Edwardians were the first club in South Africa to take up ice hockey. They began practicing at a roller skating rink and played some intra-squad games. On July 13, 1936 the South African Ice Hockey Association was formed. The first ice hockey games were played at the Empire Exhibition Rink in Milner Park, Johannesburg in September, Oxford and Cambridge paying a visit from England.

The Empire Exhibition Rink closed in January 1937, but a new facility, the Union Ice Rink in Wembley, Johannesburg, opened in June. Wiener EV paid a visit to South Africa to play a series of games to inaugurate the rink. See 1937 Wiener EV Tour of South Africa for more details.

The “Austria Cup” was presented to the South African Ice Hockey Association by members of the Austrian ice hockey team, and was to be competed for by local ice hockey teams. The cup, sculptured by Dr Fleishman of Austria, bears on its base figures representing Gobel (who was to have captained the touring team), Demmer, Nowak, and Kirchberger. On one side of the cup is the Austrian coat-of-arms and on the other, the South African coat-of-arms.” - Rand Daily Mail, 1937-07-20

The league was reorganized and an exhibition schedule was then carried out. The players were pooled among the new teams, and it was said the Mohawks would provide 13 players and two substitutes, Lions 16 players, Old Edwardians 8 players, including four substitutes, Old Parktonians three players, including two substitutes, and Rand University and Tigers, three players each and two substitutes each.

It was decided on January 7 that the cup would go to the Lions. After the third game, played on December 18, 1945, the referee had announced that there would be a fourth game for the trophy. The South African Ice Hockey Association decided to ignore this decision.

Less than 1,000 fans turned out for these games, which were the only ones played in Johannesburg in November/December 1956.

There were plans to begin the Transvaal League competition in February, but it got pushed back, and eventually cancelled.

Ice hockey play began in Durban at the local Icedrome for the 1956-57 season. There were five active teams and the Tech Rangers finished third in the local league. There were about 40 Pee Wee (U12) players who trained at the rink, and girls hockey was also briefly tried, which the crowd quickly became bored by.

In late May 1958 it was reported that ice hockey had returned to the Rand, and three teams had been formed - Wolves, Tigers and Lions. The Wolves won a triangular tournament and then traveled to Durban to face the Tomahawks.

Durban Games

A 13 week, 13 game season was arranged at the Icedrome in Durban, with players (who had had their salaries in the Transvaal League abruptly slashed) brought over from Johannesburg every weekend. The rink had been half sized since 1964 when a movie theater was built from center ice in. The games were played with four skaters and a goalie aside, and were very high scoring. The season concluded on October 2, 1970.

1972

The Peninsula Ice Rink (also called the Goodwood Ice Rink) was open in Cape Town by 1972. It had a very small ice surface, measuring only 40x20. There was another facility in Cape Town known as the Green Point Rink (or the Silver Blades Ice Rink). The Western Province Ice Hockey Association was also established. In August 1972 it stated that there were two clubs from Goodwood and one from Green Point, but the standard was not sufficiently high to warrant matches in public, so they played behind closed doors, in an informal competition.

There were three rinks in the province of Natal - the one in Durban, a quarter sized facility in Pinetown, and another quarter sized one in Pietermartizburg. Pinetown and Pietermaritzburg both had teams over the years, the former known as the Pinetown Tigers. The Peninsula Ice Hockey League was formed in Cape Town.

The Port Elizabeth Eagles were active by 1974. They played at the Humewood rink, which was smaller than the facility in Durban. The Southern Eagles won the Peninsula Ice Hockey League and the Northern Cobras became holders of the Lions Charity Ice Hockey Cup. Natal won the Idols Eve National League Trophy and the Motorcraft Knockout tournament.

Ice hockey was being played at Salisbury's Rainbow Ice Bowl in neighboring Rhodesia by 1978. Frank Mills was the chairman of Rhodesian Ice Hockey. The rink was about a third of regulation size, and there was a local league featuring four teams, who played with four skaters and a goalie. Among them were the Wild Cats and the Pink Panthers.
