The Scottish Bandy Club was formed in 1896, shortly after four-game series between a Glasgow selection and the London Bandy Club had taken place at the Glasgow Real Ice Skating Palace.

History

The club, whose stated objective was to "Promote the game of bandy or hockey on the ice," was formed under the auspices of the Scottish branch of the National Ice Skating Association. Its honorary secretary, William Pollock Wylie, was granted the same position for the Scottish Bandy Club.

On July 3, 1896, the club played its first match against a side known as the Glasgow All-Comers. The result of the game is unknown.

The Glasgow Real Ice Skating Palace was utilized as a theater from August to December, but after its re-opening as an ice rink, it played host to a match between the Scottish Bandy Club and the Glasgow University Bandy Club. First advertised by the local newspaper on December 19, the game was played at 9:15 PM on the 21st.

The Scottish Bandy Club's next fixture came on April 23, 1897. They were due to play a "Rest of Scotland" selection, but after the club did not appear, a friendly match between "A" and "B" sides of the Scottish Bandy Club was staged in an attempt to please the already-present spectators.

The "A" team was captained by Mr. W.H. Gittens, while Mr. J.A. Harby served in this capacity for the "B" side. The match was tied at one at half time, and ended 3-2 in favor of the "B" side. It was officiated by John Clark Junior.

The rosters for this match were as follows:

  • "A" Team: Goaltender - J.L. Jowett; Back - Martyn B. Kay; Half-Back - W.H. Gittens; Forwards - Bell Scott, F. Kay.
  • "B" Team: Goaltender - Stanley Glanfield; Back - "A.N. Other"; Half-Back: - George Douglas; Forwards - J.A. Harby, A.G. McLaurin.[1]

The club would not play in any subsequent matches as the Glasgow Real Ice Skating Palace closed on May 1, 1897, and did not re-open.
