IF Mölndal Hockey is an ice hockey club from Mölndal outside Gothenburg, formed in 1970. They currently play in Swedish Division 2.

History

Ice hockey has been played in the Gothenburg area since February 26, 1938, when Uddens IF was facing IF Fellows in a match at Krokslättsvallen. IF Fellows won 3-0.

During the 1940’s and 1950’s ice hockey in Mölndal was more popular than in Gothenburg, partly because there were two arenas – the home arena for Sågdalens SK – and Krokslättsvallen which was home to IF Fellows. Gothenburg then only had Gamla Ullevi, which was not particularly well maintained. In addition to these clubs, a third club named IK Rapid was formed that mostly came to focus on youth ice hockey. The three Mölndal clubs merged in 1970 under the new name FSR Mölndal, where FSR was the beginning letters in the names of the three old clubs. The following year they changed their name to Mölndals IF.

In anticipation of their own ice rink opening, in 1974-75 they played their matches in Scandinavium and the following season in the Frölundaborg ice stadium. The rink, Åby Isstadion, was completed in 1976. By 1983, the A-team had qualified for Division I. In the 1987/1988 season, the association became historic when the first Swedish hockey club enlisted a Russian player, Vladimir Lavrentjev. After the 1990-91 season, the club's main sponsor withdrew. In 1991, the name was changed to Mölndal Hockey.
