EHC Vienna Flyers
The EHC Vienna Flyers were an Austrian women's ice hockey team from Vienna, which was founded in 1998 and played in the Austria women's ice hockey Bundesliga until 2012. The Flyers played their home games in the Albert-Schultz-Halle. The biggest success of the club's history was winning the Austrian Championship in the 2000-01 season. Furthermore, the Flyers won the runner-up title four times (1998-99, 1999-2000, 2001-02 and 2008-09).
History
The EHC Vienna Flyers Wien was founded in the spring of 1998 by Alexandra Sumper and Gudrun Thaller. The name "Flyers" is derived from the organizational foundation of the new club by the operating teams of AUA and Lauda Air.
In the following season, the women's team took part in the Austrian Women's Championship under the name “EHC Vienna Flyers – the Mighties” and became runner-up behind the Villach Lady Hawks. One year later, this placement was repeated and in 2001 their first and only Austrian championship was won. Starting in 2004, they competed in the Elite Women's Hockey League.
In the 2008–09 season, the Flyers, together with the EHV Sabres Vienna, competed in Sabres/Flyers United in the EWHL and the state championship. At the end of the 2011-12 season, the Flyers were closed and a large number of the players switched to the Wiener Eislöwen-Verein.
