History of hockey in Delaware
The indoor Wilmington Ice Rink at Rock Manor opened in 1964. The Wilmington Skating Club had a senior ice hockey team by 1966, defeating the Main Line Skating Club (PA) 7-3 in their first game on January 12. By 1967 the club was known as the Wilmington Wheels. There were also youth teams known as the Wilmington Blades that competed in the Delaware Valley League. The Wilmington Wheels notably faced ESV Kaufbeuren from Germany on April 17, 1984.
The University of Delaware Ice Rink opened on September 11, 1971. The Delaware Blue Hens had a club hockey team by the 1972-73 season, playing in the Delaware Valley Collegiate Hockey Association.
The Delaware Federals were a professional team that played in the Federal Hockey League in 2011-12. Despite representing Delaware, the team did not have a home arena for games or practices. They played their first competitive game on December 16, 2011, which ended with an 18–0 loss to the Cape Cod Bluefins. The team was originally intended to play out of some arena in Delaware but became a road team when a lease deal for an arena fell through. The team was disbanded after the completion of the season.
The Delaware Thunder played in the America East Hockey League, a Junior A competition, from 2006-2008. A new Thunder franchise, based in Harrington, just outside Dover, competed in the Federal Hockey League during the 2019-20 season.
