The 1973-74 Austrian Oberliga season was contested as the second-level competition in Austria. EHC Lustenau won the championship and, as they'd had an artificial ice rink for two years, fulfilled the requirements for promotion to the Austrian Hockey League. However, they declined promotion, as their managers felt that the club had not yet had time to consolidate itself sportingly and financially. The second place finisher, EC Kitzbühel, declined the invitation to play a qualifying match against WAT Stadlau at the start of the following season.
