The Banovina of Croatia Championship was played from January 5-7, 1940. It was won by ZKD Zagreb.

Controversy surrounded the end of this game. The timekeeper announced full time, but the official did not know the rules, and a player from Karlovac shot the puck into the Varazdin goal. The referee ruled it a good goal for Karlovac and said that the game should go into overtime. Varazdin refused to play overtime and protested the result. While awaiting a ruling from the federation, both teams traveled to Zagreb, where the final was set to be played the next day. After conducting an investigation and hearing the arguments of both teams, the federation proclaimed Varazdin winners of the match by the score of 1-0.
