1920-21 Maritimes Senior Playoffs

The 1920-21 season was the first attempt at determining a Maritimes Senior Champion.

Morton and Thomson, the owners of the arena in Halifax, donated a trophy in late February to the Halifax City League. The Morton-Thomson Cup would be awarded to this league's Champion and then could be challenged for by other Maritimes teams.

Playoffs were hurriedly set up to determine champions in New Brunswick and the rest of Nova Scotia. However the lateness of the season and warm weather (there was no artificial ice available) caused the City League champion Wanderers to refuse to play any further. The City League's final actually had to be played in New Glasgow on March 16 because of the lack of ice in Halifax.

Nova Scotia Final

The 1921 Nova Scotia Amateur Hockey Championship was played between Antigonish and the Halifax Wanderers on January 9, 1922 (at the start of the next season). Antigonish beat the Wanderers in Halifax 2-1.[1] It was planned for the winner to then face Sussex for the Maritimes title.

Maritimes Final

Antigonish wanted to face Sussex for the Maritime Championship. The Morton-Thomson Cup, until the 1922 championship was decided, belonged to Antigonish. The Antigonish players understood that Sussex officially challenged for the right to play the Nova Scotia champion, but they were informed that the donors of the trophy had received no such challenge.[2] Sussex soon made an official challenge for the trophy.[3] It was planned for the game to be played in Halifax on February 2.[4]
