"An interesting game of hockey was played on Quidi Vidi Lake on Saturday afternoon last. The weather was all that could be desired, and the players seemed to enjoy the game immensely. Those who played were:-Rev. C. Knapp, Capt. Southey, Dr. Grenfell, Messrs. Portman, W. Franklin, W.F. Lloyd, J.W. James, F. Pilot, F. Stirling, Shears (3), F. Simms, and others. This game seems to be making great headway in our midst, and it is hoped that clubs will be formed by the footballers of the city, and a series of matches played before the excellent outdoor skating closes."[1]
"Last evening, in all the storm, the lovers of hockey could be seen on Quidi Vidi Lake, enjoying to the fullest extent the 'roarin' game.' Amongst those who played were Messrs. Holt, J.P. Fox, D.J. Shea, E. Bowring, Simms, W.C. Job, C. White, J.W. James, Lloyd and several others. If there was a storm in town there was nothing less than a hurricane raging with a blinding snow-drift on the pond. Several received some nasty hits and falls, but none were seriously injured, and everyone seemed to have enjoyed himself immensely."[2]
