This was the 1896-97 season of the American Amateur Hockey League, the league's first season:

The league was founded in November, 1896, in New York City with four teams:

The first two teams played out of the St. Nicholas Rink in Manhattan while the others played out of the Claremont Avenue Rink in Brooklyn.

Each of the four teams played two games against each of the others. The New York AC won the season.
